Value of large koi?
 

I need to thin out the fish in my pond. A local pond store said he would
buy the koi but we have not discussed prices yet. The fish are in the
18-22" range and healthy. What is a reasonable value for fish of this size?

I sure as hck don;t have a clue but around this part of the country,
if you had a koi that size, it would serve you best to hire Wells
Fargo or a Brinks truck to transport it, and have the Terminator
guard it in your pond! I swear at the prices they are asking, they
have to be made of solid gold or platinum.

I guess this all depends on you geographic location/climate.
If you live in an area with long, cold winters *as I do* , you've not
picked the best time of year to sell them off if you are looking for
top dollar. Most LFS/LPSs, including the one I work at, are
hard-pressed to take large fish like this even for free. If you are
able to, wait until spring-time, when demand is up and so is the
asking price. Most fish/pond stores are just looking to unload their
stock at this point and not overly-interested in taking on new stock.
(eats up profits to maintain them over the winter).

You may even have better luck dropping a few bucks to advertise it in
a local paper or put up a few ad-posters at supermarkets. Doing it
this way, you stand to probably make more than twice what a
fish-related business would offer you.

In conclusing, assuming it not to be some sort of really rare color
variety, I've seen fish this size retail for $60 - $110 in my area.

It sounds to me like a typical 'negotiation'. If they are common koi I
would be prepared for a shock. Several ranges have been noted for retail.
However you may well not even get half of that and it may be in store
credit. This may not be typical, but in our local pond bulletin board I
have seen them offered for free 'to a good home' and they were hard to
place. Like many hobbies, the retail and what an individual seller can get
are often markedly different. Good Luck!

it really depends on the grade/qual./color.

to a dealer,
$75-100+ would be for a low grade.
200-500+ for good qual.

private sale $150+ min.
