It could be that God created goldfish simply to make us grateful for
hamsters. Children like goldfish. They like taking them home, naming them,
and watching them eat. Depending on how well the child gets to know a fish
before it dies, the child may even like the flushing part, for the sheer
simplicity of it. No matchbox coffin, no small grave in the flowerbed, no
muffled eulogy, just some misguided efforts at grasping cause and effect.

"post hoc, ergo _proctor_ hoc". Callous about both pets AND latin.

Unfortunately, some dog owners do treat their pets the same way. Which is
how we come to have one of ours.
