They were made illegal in Washington State a few years ago. You could
find them everywhere before that, but no more. I'm going to Oregon
soon, so was going to buy some there for my pond. Now I find you can't
sell them in Oregon either.

All I wanted was some colorful, fast breeding small fish for my pond,
but I guess it's not going to happen.

How about mosquito fish?
Call your local mosquito control board
and see if they have some for you.
(I miss rosies too, they were always so fearless
around the koi. The males would chase great
big koi off from the egg nests they were
guarding.)

## They've never bred for me. I bought 12 last spring. There are two
left.

Should add when I had them, they did okay,
(zone 7a) even had babies but the bullfrogs ate them all. (One invasive
species
in Washington state eating another, some kind of justice in that I
guess....)

I'm not going to replace them this year. I'll use small, young expendable
goldfish to keep the skeeters in check. I always have extra numbers of small
GF. If nothing eats them they survive the winters nicely.

They live over the winter here, I guess that's the problem.

Can you still get White Cloud Minnow? If you find a nice strain they
are really pretty, long flowing fins, flashes of red/bronze. It's an
old "bread and butter" fish that could/should over winter in your area.


They're also stupidly easy to get babies out from, great beginner fish
to learn the ins and outs of breeding. I'd taken some out of a display
tank along with some extra java moss and settled them in a sweater box
until I could get to my club's monthly auction. Stupid fish made babies
in that "tank" w/out filters.

How about platys? I know one ponder here put them in when their pond got
warm enough. ~ jan

I put some in last spring. They bred like crazy, but I lost most of them
over the winter - even here in San Diego.
