Will Goldfish and Koi co-exist in the same pond?

Yes. The goldfish will out multiply the koi, but I had comets, catfish and
koi in the same pond for several years. Finally caught the catfish and the
last two comets and found them a new home.

Goldfish and koi will co-exist peacefully, but as Rich says, the goldies
will soon overpopulate. Also, they can/will crossbreed, bringing forth some
very strange offspring that are (fortunately) sterile. Other problems can
arise when it comes time to medicate, as meds that one can tolerate are
poisonous to the other. One med that comes to mind is for flukes: it's a one
dose, one-time, non-filter killing med that is totally harmless to koi, but
will kill every one of your goldfish dead in one week: *to the day* -
painfully. So choosing medications and dosages becomes more complicated in a
"mixed" pond. Many people to have both, and other fish, too, kinda like a
"community" fish tank. As a personal choice, I figured I'd "specialize" in
one. It's a matter of preference.

If your eventual goal is a koi pond, either don't do goldfish at all, or
use fantails that are easy to remove. Goldfish can kill a koi. If you have
a lot of male goldfish and you put in a large koi, regardless that it isn't
even old enough to have eggs they will try to spawn it and the continual
razing will kill the koi, IME. The next week all the goldfish were removed
save a shubunkin with really long fins that slowed it down.

The year before last I gave the shubunkin to someone with a large goldfish
only pond so I could just have koi in my koi ponds. The lily pond has come
in handy to satisfy my love of fancy tailed goldfish along with frog spawn.
