A perc test or percolation test is to test for draining ability nmot
water holding ability, even though a bad perc test may indicate the
ability to hold water..Whata you need to do is get several soil
samples from various depths and in the area your wanting to dig this
pond. Use a post hole digger or pipe to get plugs, and then bag em up
and have em tested by a soils lab for permeability......The closer you
get to the actual depth your wanting for the pond the
better........Even if its bad on the permeability scale of holding
water yu can improve it greatly with an almost guarantee of it holding
water with the addition of volclay ( sodium bentonite), which is dirt
cheap to buy. The soils test will show you how much bentonite will
need to be added to the existing soil to make it worth of holding
water. Another thing is the water table, if its in the height of your
ponds water, if it drops so can your ponds level......
