Brighter pond report

Luka and I ambled down to the pond this morning, and what a difference!

The sky is electric blue, bright sun, and just a whiff of frost still on
the grass in the shade. Even the redwing blackbird's scolding sounds
brighter. They're nesting in the usual places, a big patch of cattails at
each end of the pond. I haven't seen the nest, but I'll look more
carefully in a few days. Even though the birds try to distract intruders,
you can still narrow the search by the level of hysteria as you walk slowly
along the shore.
The yellow bog iris I bought some years ago have spread nicely in the
shallows, which bodes well for some color later. More of the wild purple
ones spring up every year; not a bad thing at all.
Only saw one fish, a teenaged bass that got up early; the water is too cold
for much activity, but soon now I'll see cleared circles in the shallows as
the spawning season gets underway. Walter the Koi has been hiding lately,
probably because I was looking for him. I did see him a couple of weeks
ago when I wasn't trying.
Good day to spend outside.

Peace,

Thanks Gary. We went for the walk with you. Any visual pics to go with
the verbal ones?

The first yellow iris are blooming today
on the island.

There are a couple of flower buds making
their way to the surface from the lily pads

and DRUM ROLL please!!!!

The lotus jan gave me has a leaf above
the water line (in a container water garden)
and I haven't done it in yet!!!! I think this is
my fourth or fifth try with a lotus. And was/is
going to be my last one.... so it looks, knock
wood, like this one is succeeding!!!

I had the first water iris bloom yesterday. One water lily has a fat bud
at the surface this morning. It looks like a white one. The Lotus has
about 5 floating leaves. All the other pond plants are growing well except
the zebra grass. :-)

All irises swelling and yellow should open tomorrow. 2 lily buds heading
for the surface and one will be there tomorrow, will it open? Will the
sunshine?

Arrowheads have broke the surface and lizard tail is getting thick. Swamp
Hibiscus have buds, I think I'll divide it this weekend.

Last weekend I put all the tropical pond plants out on the deck or patio to
harden off. Except the tropical lilies. So far things are looking good and
the weather is nice and mild. :) ~ jan
