Koi and ciclids together

I was at a commercial fish hatchery the other day.
They told me that I could have koi and cichlids together.
They said that the cichlids would kill my fantails and comets,
but could get along with equal or larger sized koi.

Anyone have this kind of experience?
There are some beautiful cichlids, but I, concerned about mixing them.

unless your pond can maintain 72+F the
cichlids will die.

I kept a Satanoperca jurupari (Geophagus jurupari) in the pond last summer
with temps ranging from 60's to the lower 80's, and it did fine. The pond
also had comets, shubunkin, minnows, and koi, and everybody was fine. I
guess it all depends what kind of cichlid you want in your pond.

I've often toyed with the idea of having a pond of oscars or cichlids, if
only I lived someplace warmer. I don't know if cichlids would be good
pondmates with koi though, because cichlids can be fairly agressive,
especially when they spawn.

Koi and ciclids together

I once read an article that fish are aggressive to protect their food rights
(and protect young but that's a different story). They lay claim to a
certain area and try their hardest to protect it from others like
themselves. The article went on to say that fish tend to be aggressive only
towards fish that have the same body shape as themselves. After reading this
article I started taking a good look at my tank. I have bluegills, cichlids,
a Rio Grande perch, a cory cat, a pleco, and an alligator gar. What I
noticed is that the cichlids are aggressive to each other but no-one else,
the bluegills are aggressive to each other but no-one else, and the cory
cat, alligator gar, and pleco don't bother anyone. I recently added a Rio
Grande perch who shares somewhat of the same body shape as the bluegills.
The normally calm to everyone else bluegills immediately started pecking
order fights with the Rio Grande perch who shared a similar body shape with
them.

Just my 2 cents.

It would depend on the type of cichlids. Angels are cichlids and the Koi
would kill them just playing with them, Africans would more then likley kill
koi equal in size, they do it to their own, like someone else said they are
terrible when they breed, which is often for cichlids. If your Koi are huge,
then they may not bother, and if you have lots of hiding spots you will not
see the cichlids, they like to be in caves. If fish are raised together,
that makes for a happier place, but cichlids are meant to be veiwed from the
side not above.
