koi disappeared again..

hi all,

i live in the US pacific northwest, and I began feeding my koi the
appropriate wheatgerm feed a couple months ago when a local store
suggested it'd be warm enough to start feeding them.. they came up
every day and ate and all was good.

but 4-6 weeks ago they stopped coming to the surface, and i haven't
seen them since. it's as though they're hybernating again.

should i be worried?

thanks

I have the same problem with a small inground 150 pool. For the last 2
weeks the rosy reds and GF dart out and grab the sinking pellets and dash
back into the hornwart under a water lily. I'm sure there must have been a
visit from a heron or snake. That's the only pool or pond we don't have
netted.

If they've completely disappeared you
could have been visited by a predator.
Probably a heron as raccoons usually
make a mess of the pond.

General Predator Deterrents:

Electric FiShock Fido fence - made to keep dogs
and cats out of flower beds, fence off the pond,
fairly close to the edge.

Pond Guardian Electric Fence - made to attach to
rocks and lay out over the water of the pond

Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler - sometimes two
are needed. Can be dialed to different settings and put on a timer.
Shock of water coming on startles predators.
Attach to something solid if raccoons push it over.

Netting - sold as bird netting for fruit trees

String Fishing Line - works with some herons

Fish Decoy - works with kingfishers, will give resident fish time to
hide (build a rock cave, or sink a chimney flue or black pipe)

Heron decoy, alligator decoy - must be moved often, works for some
ponders.

Humane traps - for raccoons, for rent or to borrow from many animal
control facilities

You can go to www.froogle.com, enter in the product and find more
information and price information.

* Note - do not attempt to harm herons or any birds of prey. They are
protected by federal law. Fines and jail time will ensue, cutting into
pond dollars and pond time.

kathy :-)

Is your water murky or clear? If clear and you can't see them at all, I go
with K30's predator response, if murky, check your water parameters and
report back. ~ jan

It's quite murky, so I can't tell if they're there or not.

I just checked pH and it looked like 8.2 (ouch) so I put in some pH
reducing salts. It's supposed to be 7-7.6, right?

It's about 500 gallons, by my estimate. At the moment I only have a
little pump that circulates water down a very small waterfall. Should
I get a filter as well?

thanks

The pH can be as high as 9 without being a problem for the fish. The
important thing is to have it stable. Check the pH first thing in the
morning, and last thing in the afternoon and see how much it changes. The
problem with the pH lowering salts and chemicals is that they consume the
carbonates that make the system stable. I don't worry about my pH, I try to
keep my KH carbonate hardness above 100 ppm to assure stability. It causes
my pH to generally be in the mid 8's. The carbonates are used by filter
bacteria to convert the ammonia and nitrites, and if it is spent, then the
filter stops working.

========================
A 500 gallon pond that contains fish would need some type if filter. The PH
of my ponds often goes that high. A *stable* PH is more important.

8.4 is no problem, as RTB mention koi are bothered by it at all. Course
plants & filters do better when it is 8.4 and less.

If you've got koi, you're going to need a filter, that is why your water is
murky. You need to check ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, pH & KH plus the
temperature of your pond. How many koi? ~ jan
