help with Algae
 

I have about 1/4 acre pond with an severe algae problem this year.
I've looked at using Tetra Algae Control which states that it safe for
ornamental plants and fish, however my pond is stocked with trout. Can
anyone tell me if this product is safe for game fish, and if not is
there a product out there that I could use. Please help.

Aeration is necessary and lots of it. I use Baraclear P-80 to keep my
algae in check, and so far its done a great job........For a pond in
the deep south to have clean clear water that has 4 feet or more
visibiity is super considering its a natural pond.

Not familiar with the Tetra stuff, but I tend to steer clear of any
products containing copper sulphate or copper anything in it.........I
don;t know what is in the Tetra stuff but chances are its aluminum
sulphate, which is alum, and its the main ingredient in Baraclear as
well. It works by locking up the phosporus in the water which algae
needs to be able to intake and utilize the nitrogen to grow with.
Most all of the aluminum sulphate products are good and pretty safe to
use with plants and fish.


I have bass, bream, catfish, warmouth, koi and GF in my pond, which
covers a bit more than 1 acre. Other than Baraclear I have not used
any other chemicals for algae control other than Potassium
Permanganate 2 x a year for general prophylactic reasons, since there
is no filtration, only aeration. While PP is not a chemical to cler
up algae it does neutralize a lot of the nutrients algae needs for
growthk, so knocking down any algae is a bonus for me with PP. Don;t
know about PP and trout, but I am sure your county extension or ocal
university field office could steer you in the right direction.
