Default OT Hurricanes

For those of you in places in-land yet still affected by Hurricanes.... My
son is in mid-TX, how much rain/wind do you think they'll get if Emily hits
TX's central coast line?

Anyone on here have to worry about that, live close to the coast line?

Hard to say......I have not followed Emily since it decided to go west
and not head north, I sort of just stopped tracking it. The last I
seen it wa mainly Mexico Riviera section and the very ow point of
Texas possibly....NOt much in that area, and its a still a
considerable distance to central texas coastline, but IIRC the water
in that area is relatively shallow, and usuallay storm surge is on the
eastern side of the eye, and in deeper water like in the panhandle
area, of Florida etc it often goes outwards of 100 or more miles along
the coat line..........I don;t think Texas is gonna see much from
Emily in regards to high winds but may get a good dose of
rainfall......One good thing though is that area is wide and dry, so
it will die out pretty quickly and probably not have sufficient
strength to blow across mexico at that point and into the pacific
ocean as some have done in the past when they hit that narrow neck of
land further south........

Checkout http://www.weatherunderground.com for some good forecasts and
probability of strikes etc on Emily. IMNSHO Weatherunderground is
about the best there is when it comes to giving the facts. One fellow
worked for the NHC and NOAA for years and is now a private weather
forecaster, for 4 major airlines and just about all of the offshore
oil companies......He knows his stuff. He had Hurricane Dennis
forecast from day one and missed landfall by 20 miles, 5 days prior to
NHC finally making a guess. I now that there is a big difference in
a "broadcast meteorologist" and a meteorologist
forecaster.........Those knitwits on the 6 and 10 oclock news are
broadcast forecasters........that put lots of spin to things the real
forecasters provide them with...........its a numbers thing with
them....During Dennis, it wa already a CAT 4 according to the
pressures they had, and they were giving windspeed off the south west
quadrant, and not the northeast quadrant like they should have
been......Taking the pressures and speeds they gave it only amounted
to a low CAT 3 at that time, where in all reality it was already a
high CAT4 if you read the pressures off of where they normally are
read and figured from. The foks at WU said it really matter not much
as its still a bad storm and one would never know if it wa a cat 3 or
4 if it hits, so there was no need to cause yet more concern with the
public unnecessarily..........about 4 hours later though NHC finally
fessed up and said they had used wrong readings on Dennis.......but
those using WU already new that.........Pretty bad in using wrong
readings when you depend on these porofessionals.........to give you
the FACTS!

Right now there is only a 10% chance of Emily hitting in Texas area
except for that little low point. Even Corpus Christi has a less than
1% chance the way it is right now. So if your a betting gal, put the
money on it hitting predominately in Mexico for a win.

Storm surge in Emilys case would be mainly north not east since it
went west instead of north as the hurricanes that hit the pan handle
normally do..........IMNSHO, all hurricanes are more than welcome to
head due west........once clear of the Florida keys and other Carib
island chains.

Whereabouts in mid-TX? I'm in Austin. If Emily follows the current
prediction at: http://tinyurl.com/bq9yd and hits south of Brownsville,
we probably won't get anything more than afternoon showers. Looks like
they have a hurricane watch/tropical storm warning up as high as Corpus
Christi, but it's so close to land already, it would be hard for the eye
to come ashore north of Brownsville, even if it made a hard turn.

We've been getting some "locally severe" thundershowers off and on for
the last week or so, but I don't think it's even connected to the
hurricane. Just tell your son the one rule that a lot of people forget:
DON'T drive into the water!

I haven't studied it much, since there is finally one not
headed my way. I had Ivan last year, and have been touched
by Arlene, Cindy and Dennis so far this year.

It looks to be a pretty small storm, not to be confused
with a weak storm of course. Dennis came is just east of
the AL/FL line at 120MPH. I am only about 50 miles away,
just on the west side of Mobile Bay (about 2 blocks
actually.) Dennis barely bent my banana trees here. Winds
here topped out barely above tropical storm, which is not
worse than many summer storms.

You have to look at the maps that show how far out the
different wind speeds go, and compare that to the forecast
path and the cone of error.

One of my favorite sites during the hurricane season is
flhurricanes.com. If you check out the forums section you
can learn alot from the meteorologists and hobbyist
discussions.

Brett is in, or close to, Liverpool, Texas.
South of Houston, east, and inland, of Galveston.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't worried, just wanted to give them a heads up, as
I know the weather isn't the first thing on their minds.

Whereabouts in mid-TX? I'm in Austin.

They're in Copperas Cove, he's stationed at Ft. Hood.

He's already been out in a heavy downpour watching all the "idiots" on the
road. I asked, are you driving and talking on the cell phone in this
downpour? "Yes." Well, well...? He claims the wider wheels on his BMW grip
better, to which I said, that doesn't stop the other guy from running into
you doesn't it? s ~ jan

They'll be fine, then. At least, weatherwise. This time. ;-)

A little paranoia (and full attention) when driving is highly
recommended, especially during rain. Between the people
who're afraid to drive over 20mph, and the ones who think they can still
drive 80, it's best to just stay home. ;-)

Galveston and other areas right on the coastline may get a little high
water,
but if he's been there very long, he's probably used to it. ;-)
Shouldn't be
anything very spectacular that far up the coast.
