Rose Colour and Temperature "Just Joey" in cool climates

"Radika Kesavan" wrote in message ... I don't know from where this person has posted the photographs, but it looks just like this: http://community.webshots.com/album/43297093VnBZAA Perfect. That's what I was thinking. Bronze Start is supposed to be a bit darker than that, so if that holds true I'll be plenty happy. I looked closely at that website, and I think that person is somewhere in CA, judging by what other plants she/he seems to have, including California Poppies. The colour and temperature correlation is a conundrum to me. On roses like Just Joey, Souv. de St. Anne's, Irene Watts, etc., if the temperatures go up, the colout gets less deep, going almost to white, and in the case of Margo Koster and Tropicana, colour is coral when the wethar gets hot and almost red when the temperatures drop. In general, with these roses, the warmer weather tends to dilute the colour, driving it to paler shades. However, I have this one rose, Pink Cardinal Hume, where the pink colour is a pretty deep pink when the weather gets hot (85 plus), medium pink with hand-painted speckles of deeper pink at medium temperatures (70 to 80 or so), plain medium pink when it is coolishly pleasant (60 to 70), and very pale pink (almost white) when it goes down further (45 to 55). I just don't get it. Have talked to the breeder of the rose (Kim Rupert) about this, and he says that in his SoCal home, this is how it behaves. It is a very nice rose, and I would strongly recommend it. I have it in a group, with a(n eight year old) Fair Bianca, a (three year old) Tradescant, and the Pink Cardinal Hume is outstripping and outperforming both the Austins. That combination of white, very dark red and pink of various shades together look marvellous. Thanks again, It was a pleasure. Bronze Star sounds like it might be a star, after all. I would love to hear about how it performs for you. -- Radika California USDA 9 / Sunset 15 |
