OK, the jury is back and those 4 twigs I was worried about are definitely
dead. I need replacements which I promise to plant deeply enough to prevent
this from happening again.
Here's the question.
I have a long border bed out front up against a short hedgerow. In it I have
4 Mr. Lincolns that are very happy, from the previous owner, who had nothing
but red out there...I was bored so I took the opportunity to plant some HT
fragrant, saturated coloured roses. So far I've managed to kill many of
them...Moon Shadow, Perfect Moment, Double delight, Chicago Peace....some
other's I can't even remember. A few have decided to live despite my
interference...Henry Fonda, Midas Touch, Tropicana, Fragrant Cloud, and now
I have room for 4 more prisoners. I apparently have this highly clashing
thing going on here and I'm starting to hate it.
I originally thought I could get a spectrum effect...it didn't look as good
as I imagined it might. Of course, the other colours never really produced
anything to look at, but I'm willing to move any of the roses elsewhere for
the sake of better design. Any suggestions for attractive HT roses to work
in my climate, and with my survivors?
I'm in Maryland, in 6b where it's wet and colder than it should be.
I like fragrance and high chroma.
I promise to adhere to better rose care...honest.

This probably sounds like a broken record.

Find and contact your local Rose Society and see what they recommend, they
have a huge collective base of experience and are happy to help.

There are four Rose Societies in MD listed on the ARS web site www.ars.org.

Most of the varities you mentioned are modern Hybrid Teas, would you
consider some of the OGR's, English or Canadian varieies? Many of these are
very hardy and offer execellent garden performance.

fabulous choice Bubble bath.
Hardy & shade resistant.

How about that old staple Alba
Meidiland. Tough as Nails and
Bulldozer Resistant. I'm not kiding.
I saw it @ a construction site3 years ago where
It was trampled down every day by said
bulldozer for 6 months. But I went
back last week and it was again a 6' shrub
getting ready to bloom.

Or Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria
Vigorousness and Smell that will
knock you out.

Jane has OGRs. I think she was hoping to hear from some people living
in MD and growing roses. Kind of what Usenet is about--talking about

Bubble Bath is a modern Hybrid Musk.
Apparently Cecile Brunner is a parent.

They say it is pink but really in any sort of heat
it is white. Extremely shade tolerant. I have it
growing where it gets 1 hour of sun. Still blooms
non stop but covers itself about twice a year.

Smell that will stop you from twenty paces.

Rogers has it in their catalogue. Vintage has a picture.

Darlows is indeed a single but since it tends to bloom in clusters
all you see is bouquet after bouquet. And the scent Mmmmmm!

What do you think of Gloire Lyonnaise. It was one
of the first/early hybrid teas so it retains much of the
vigor and relatively clean performance of that time.
I know you love White Lightnin' you will love this one.

Theo, Thank you very very much. Just what i needed to get investigations
going. I like the idea of white and red out there. I think the Alba Meidland
looks like my fav so far, but it's not a HT and I was hoping to keep them
all together. Where can I find the Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria? I'm sure I'll
need several! Is it at all resistant to disease? I understand it's an old
HT. I love the form!
