Default new rose garden - I have wierd bugs - not jap beatles help?

I have two climbing roses, ones red one is yellow, I didn't keep the
names, I also have a beautiful "rainbow sherbet rose" which was my first
to bloom, with two tea roses and what was supposed to be a moonlight white
that turned out to be a lavinder rose. Today I went out to look at them
and found that they had bugs all over them. They look like mini-
lightening bugs that are black with a yellow strip longways down the
middle I'm not sure what to do, I've treated them for bugs and mold twice
this season.

Are they Tea roses or Hybrid Tea roses? Different
category of roses. Tea roses are old garden roses.
Hybrid Tea roses are modern roses that have Tea
roses as a parent (the other parent is the Hybrid
Perpetual). The reason I mention this is that in
some cases old garden roses and modern roses
can't handle the same treatment, so it's a good idea
to know what kind of rose you have before
proceeding with a treatment.

Sounds like the dreaded cucumber beetle. I get
them, too, especially if I don't keep up with weeding.
I don't spray, though, and they aren't a problem
every year. The infestation last year got me to deal
with weeds this summer, despite the heat! So far
I haven't seen any around.

Check out this site for bug ID and control ideas:
http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/no...5e/veg025e.htm
or search on cucumber beetle. Many university
and State ag depts have info. on this pest.

This site has information about a lot of different
rose pests & diseases:

Default new rose garden - I have wierd bugs - not jap beatles help? - +blooming probs.

Thanks! That's what it is, I have a weed free envirnoment currently, the
area is mulched though. The neighbor behind me just started a veggie
garden this year, so maybe thats the source. Their yard is typicly over
grown with weeds and my garden is somewhat close to their yard. I got my
roses from Lowes, my husband planted them and we didn't think to save the
info. I seem to have a problem with plants that don't flower much. Three
out of the 6 roses do not bloom much or at all. I know the climbing one
my bloom next year, but I not sure about the rest. I also have other
plants that do not bloom, three Hydrangas, 6 dianuths, and two gerber
daisies. I live in the chicago area. Any ideas

Kathy;
Not blooming is often tied up with pruning and light plus water and
food. Somewhat with bed prep. I suggest you go to ARS.com and browse
that site for expert advice. A healthy rose should bloom if it gets 6
hours direct sun each day. Remember that climbers often bloom on old
wood so prune with care.

Note; Lowe's sells good quality roses so I think you are safe there
without the name.
1. Soak the bed deeply each week.
2. Work some time release fertilizer into the bed.
3. Prune 1/3 off tall plants in early spring. ( one cane out of three
if you want taller plants).
4. Prune only 3rd year growth off climbers.
5. Spraying is so diverse that you will need to read the ARS site for
that.
6. Roses should show good health, new growth, blooms if you get these
steps correct.

Good advice.

In addition to online sources, I highly recommend
the Ortho series of soft-cover gardening books.
There are two (that I know of) on roses. These
books are fairly cheap and available just about
everywhere, including places like Lowes &
Home Depot.

Thanks for the advice. I gave my garden the 3rd treatment of a systemic
three in one garden treatment by bayer. The cucumber beatles appear to be
gone, and all but 2 of my rose bushes are in bloom. The 2 that are not
blooming are growing phenomenally. I also have three carpet rose bushes
that are 2 years old, they were all labled the same, appleblossem carpet
roses, one is not flowering and has grown so large it has taken over the
whole garden.

I would take a close look at the large rose and compare it to the other
two. Leaf, stems, color of leaf, etc. It may not be an Appleblossom
Carpet! Wouldn't be the first time a rose was mislabeled! ;-))
