Purple or Lavender Roses

Do they exist? I have looked online and everything I've found under
purple is really more a mauve. I want something that's a true shade
of purple... TIA

I've only seen two roses in Real Life that looked purple to me, Reine des
Violettes and Cardinal de Richlieu, and I know this can be affected by
local growing conditions, not to mention (if you're not looking at them
in Real Life) the vagaries of photography. I've seen some blossoms of the
former that look closer to dark pink, but I've also seen some grown in
hot climates that are lip-smacking deep purple, grape-juice purple.

Same with Cardinal de Richlieu, though it can actually veer toward a
blue-violet as well (not that this is a problem for me).

I'm growing a variety called Basye's Purple, which some photos show to be
purple as all get-out; other photos show it as wine-dark, more burgundy
than purple (not that this is a problem either). I haven't actually seen
it bloom yet; in fact, until last week, I thought mine was dead. Rugosa
hybrids can be mysterious little creatures.

Individual perception can also (pardon the pun) color your impression of
how purple a rose is. Like fragrance perception, color can sometimes come
across differently to each of us. What I see as purple may not seem that
way to you.

Several folks here suggested Outta The Blue (which isn't really blue but
is described as purple by some) last year, and when I saw it in the local
nursery I decided against it because (to my eyes) it's a little too close
to International Herald Tribune, which I already grow and which I
consider dark mauve. Some floribunda aficionados like Intrigue; on Bob
Bauer's web page:

it looks dark burgundy but in my neighbor's garden looks red-violet, like
a darker, more classic-budded Angel Face (which most folks, I think,
would agree is a lavender rose but to some looks pink).

As for lavender roses, there are tons, though some that are called
lavender look just pink to me. At The Uncommon Rose:

http://www.uncommongarden.com/r/m.html

you can search on the category "mauve" and see photos of colors ranging
from real mauve to burgundy, violet, purple, and pink.

It would be fun to do an entire garden with nothing but mauve-category
roses. Perhaps it's time for me to dig up some more lawn....

Outta The Blue turned out to be that fuschia pink here....with a yellow
reverse?!? Nice rose, very good scent, good substance to the flowers,
in that they survived a lot of wind and rain *open*, but not purple, at
least not at these cool spring temps. I've noticed that they age to a
more purple color, tho, as the yellow fades to white. Mine is right
next to Sophie's Perpetual, whose outer petals of virtually the same
color as OTB. I'm disappointed in the color but not in the rose.
