S&W Greenhouse (was Breaking Dormancy...)

In article m,
says...

How long does it normally take for a rose to break dormancy once
planted?

Although ten or so are leafing out nicely, two of my BIG GORGEOUS S&W
Greenhouse bareroots are just beginning to sprout. I think it depends
on the rose variety, and certainly how you are caring for the rose.
Keeping it moist with a daily soak of the soil and spray of the canes?
Lightly mounding with pine straw to keep the canes from drying out?

Shiva -- I see that you said you bought some roses this year from S&W
Greenhouse. I'm expecting mine from them any day -- I went ahead and got
container roses, since I was SO impatient!

Since you've bought from them can you give me an idea of the quality of their
plants?

Kim--they are wonderful! I ordered my bare roots last fall. (I am a
true rose junkie, still had some in pots that had to go into the
ground at that point and I was ordering for Spring 2003!)

They deliver in late February--apparently to everyone. These bare
roots were among the biggest and healthiest I have ever seen!
LONNNNNNG roots, and lots of them, and plants with 5, 6, and more
canes, all very green and fresh. They are only a distributor but they
clearly take good care of their roses. I saw canker on one of the
roses, emailed them, got a response the next day and a replacement
rose two days later with no questions asked.

All except two are leafing out--of the two one is looking iffy--one
cane is blackening.

S&W apparently does not ship to California, but for those of us living
elsewhere, they are a great source! And the PRICES! Some of my roses
cost $12.99 a piece. I can't get them here for less than $16.

Let me know how the potted ones come. I might just be tempted to try a
few!

I will let you know, for sure! They didn't come this week so it SHOULD be next
week. I was so impatient I emailed them and they said VA and WV were shipping
this week and next.

It'll be good to know how the potted ones are packed, and if the
quality is just as good as the bare roots. I'm excited for you, Gotta
love rose deliveries!-
