Default Oak root fungus?

Hi all
I'm gardening in Santa Barbara, southern California, zone 10, about 5
mi. from the ocean. My back yard is adobe clay, but when properly amended
and kept mulched and watered, it produces great flowers, including roses.
I'm in the midst of installing a new rose garden in a bare patch where some
trees were removed. I now realize that the trees were dying of oak root
fungus! Several trees around the yard seem to have it. Will this be a
problem to my new rose bushes? I never even thought of this before!

Thanks for any help ...
Sue

Aieee! Ladies, this is truly awful.

Well, I suppose I can always plant cactus or succulents there....

Thank you both for your suggestions and links.
Sue
