Default Root Pruning

I'm about to plant a hedge of bare-root Rosa Rugosa. Because of ground condition, I can't dig the trench as deep or as wide as I would like. I think the best solution is to prune the roots but the question is, by how much ?! 25%? 50%? Any advice / suggestions most welcome.
