What a joke. I've lived in Sydney 34 years and temperatures have never
dropped below freezing at any time of day. I'd say we're Zone 10 too,
except perhaps the west at the foothills of the Blue Mountains where
some frost occurs.

There are so many errors in Botanica. I hope they fix them some time
soon. There is apparently a big rose encyclopedia due to be published
out of the UK before Christmas, but that's all I know. Interesting.

When and if you know the name of this encyclopedia, I'd appreciate another
post here with the info. I too am dubious of Botanica's. I noticed a while
back that they list Mme. Alfred Carriere as hardy to zone 4. Closer
scrutiny led to the discovery of many other errors, which was quite
annoying, especially considering the book's reputation and it's proud price
tag. It would be nice to have an accurate reference.

Actually, looking at the map for Brisbane in my Botanica's Roses (which I
have precariously balanced on my lap) the zoning looks about right to me.
There is a line of zone 10 along the coast and then it is zone 9 behind. I
know that the weather station we have at my parents' home recorded 0.4 C
several times this winter while it is a couple of degrees warmer than that
at my house. As you move to the western suburbs of Brisbane, you do start
getting areas that will get below freezing in winter. My father rents a farm
that is 1 hour SW of Brisbane and they got -6 C this year (quite frosty!).

I was actually quite suprised by this. I just assumed that Sydney would be
several degrees cooler being 1000kms south of Brisbane.

What I found more suprising was a band of zone 10 along the south, east
coast of Victoria in the Botanica's zone map. I would have thought it would
be zone 9 at the highest being so close to Tasmania.

I would be interested to hear more about the new rose encyclopedia when you
find out more.
