What is the purpose of pruning tea roses in the spring besides removing dead
material? If these plants were not pruned would each bud produce a flower?

Taking out smaller and weaker branches in order to force more energy
to the stronger canes, giving the bush a stronger foundation.

Shaping a bush to conform to a certain style.

Limiting the eventual size of the bush and preventing legginess (which
is related to the first reason).

Reducing the number of eventual blooms to increase the size of the
remaining blooms.

Removing inner branches to allow for better airflow and thus reducing
the possibility of fungal diseases.

Removing certain crossing branches, which are not desireable for
several reasons, both practical and aesthetic.

These are just 6 reasons and I'm sure that there are more.
