Fragrant, Yellow rose recommendation

Hi,
Any recommendation for a deep/bright yellow (not pale yellow) rose
that is fragrant too. I have shortlisted Sunsprite and Midas Touch,
but, none seems to be very fragrant (I thought Sunsprite was, but,
Edmund's catalog calls its fragrance to be slight). I have Oregold
which has nice color but no fragrance at all.

Thanks,
Debu.

I grow Midas Touch just north of you in Seattle. Planted it last year, so I
only have one year of experience to go by. It was not especially fragrant,
but it could be because it's young. Wasn't a super-strong grower either
compared to other roses planted at the same time, but that could be just
mine.

Sunsprite *is* fragrant, and this rose even wins at times in the
Fragrance class in Rose shows according to reliable Rosarians in
Northern California. It appears as if Edmund's may have inherites a
clone that is not and that is what they are offering .

I got my fragrant Susnprite from a local nursery (Liggett's) that got
sold to Ashdown Roses which bought all their stock as well. And their
catalogue describes Sunsprite like this: "A dark yellow floribunda with
intense fragrance from the Kordes family. The double blooms and bushy
growth habit make this good for the mid-border spot needing a splash of
yellow." So, it looks like may be Ashdown carries the fragrant Sunsprite
that I purchased over here in San Jose. If you would like to search
their site as well as to contact them:

Another yellow rose that I find fragrant and does very well here is
King's Ransom:

Lord Mountbatten is a fragrant floribunda that thrives he

Of course, Soleil d'Or is the most fragrant rose of any colour to my
nose, but I cannot recommend it for your climate, since most people say
that it is very susceptible to fungal diseases.

I agree with Radika that Sunsprite is fragrant. It was the first rose I
bought before I knew anything about roses and I bought it because of the
fragrance. You know, the rose that smells so nice that you just have to keep
putting it up to your nose so that you can smell it yet again :)

An added bonus is that I find my two, I like it so much I bought another, do
not get any black spot despite living in a humid climate, overhead watering
three times a week and living next to Double Delight who does get black
spot.

Midas Touch for me was very strong new plant last summer. Not very
fragrant, not much form, but a great, great garden rose.

Hi Deb,

If you're looking for a fragrant yellow, I'd recommend my favorite - Graham
Thomas. I grow Sunsprite as well, and Graham Thomas is much more fragrant
than Sunsprite.

Hey Mike, do you grow Austin's Golden Celebration? I have a baby (last
year's ownroot from Muncy's Rose Emporium in FL) in my garden. I think I
chose it because it is not supposed to get as big here at Graham Thomas,
andbecause its color is supposed to be a bit deeper. I have it planted
between Granada and Pat Austin. I like complementary/contrasting (or, some
say "clashing" color combos!) Pat Austin has a weird scent, (part fruity
part myrrh??) and is a wonderful coppery orange--very distinctive for an
Austin, in color, anyway.)

I grow Sunsprite as well, and Graham Thomas is much more fragrant than
Sunsprite.

Austins are the DEAL for those of us who love fragrance damned near best
of all. I grow a whole bunch of them, all pretty young as I am a new rose
grower.

No I don't. It was on the wish list this year, but I bought so many
climbers, Austins and other large roses, it got bumped. I also have many
yellows, which is another reason it didn't make the cut.

I really like the picture of Golden Celebration on the cover of Austin's
catalog, though. I might break down and make room for it somewhere before
the planting window closes this year :-)

IMO, the best Austins for fragrance and garden worthiness would be
Golden Celebration, which frequently wins fragrance awards in rose
shows, Tamora for its complex myrrh/citrus scent, and Fair Bianca for
the total 'myrrh scent (close to mothballs by my nose)....Many of the
Austins are simply gigantic in Southern California and the earlier ones
disease-resistant only if by that term you mean 'will not actively seek
out fungi and pests.'

Well, you may be the reason I ordered the thing. The neck and the short-
term memory are the first to go.

Tamora for its complex myrrh/citrus scent,

Not to mention being terminally cute. 2.5 feet tall and not an inch taller
here! My blooms are very small, but I love them all.

You know, I like the myrrh scent, but I am off white roses for now. I have
a baby La Paloma (is that an Austin??) that Ken Muncy sent me by mistake
(supposed to be Perdita, one of only two mistakes he has made in many
orders)and a whole bunch of white modern roses, and they all just age too
ugly. The blooms. Then there are thrips. Most upsetting, my climbing white
iceberg was killed by ground bees (they had to have ther new nest right
THERE). The only white I like is the grandiflora White Lightnin', because
it has such vigor, great scent, and is never out of bloom. Best (modern)
white I have found for this area.

As you know, I have not been growing long for anything to get gigantic
here.

Hey Shiva, if you are thinking that Golden Celebration is smaller than
Graham Thomas, you are in for a surprise. It will get huge!

It is classed in many places as a climber. The blooms have more
petals than Graham Thomas and are in general prettier in my opinion.
They also last longer.

All in all it is a pretty great rose.

Oops. Is that the same as "The Dove?" And if not, is the latter an Austin?
I really thought this one was an Austin.

Tell me! The little bahstahds STUNG me! Okay, here is the truth: I had
Great Century there, and they made a nest underneath and around it. (These
tiny bees love drought conditions. That is when they appear.) I quickly
dug out GC (suited up, waited until they weren't swarming near the
entrance, sliced the shovel down one side, ran away, waited, repeated,
then heaved it out and into a waiting pot. I then treated the area with
Very Nasty Bee Killer. A foam number you shoot into the holes. Left it
alone for a month or so, observing just a few confused bees coming around
at first, then none. Dug out the soil, replaced it, and put climbing
Iceberg in, because I wanted to make a "room" there, with an arching
trellis/whatever. Blinking bees snuck back in and stung my neck before I
noticed they were back. So, let's hear from the anti-spray folks about how
delicate bees are--how sensitive to chemicals. These got ten-day shots of
orthenex all spring and summer, too. Sure they have extra sets of eyes and
are developing feathers, but they can still sting! :)
