I'm looking for info on distilling rose essential oil, or any other ideas on
what to do with HUGE quantities of petals.

Do you have literally tons of rose petals from highly fragrant old
roses such as damasks and gallicas?

That's what it takes to produce an ounce or two of attar of roses.
The petals must be picked early in the morning and processed quickly
by steam distillation.

It's an industrial scale process and very labor intensive.

You could make a potpourri using the petals. There are many recipes online
for natural/organic products that you can create. I know someone who makes
rose tea for me using the petals as one of the ingredients, and it smells
and tastes wonderful. I could find the website that has many similar ideas
if you're interested. Let me know. S

Thanks. Yes, I know, my humble garden is not producing TONS, but with my
collection numbering in the hundreds, and growing, it seems a shame to just
dump them (the petals) in the compost, and too much for potpourri. I figure
it's worth trying, if even for a few drops of precious oil. Any other ideas
greatly appreciated.

My other question is: how can everyone find time to tend all their roses,
and still have time to hang out here? In north central California it's
spring, and everything is growing by leaps and bounds.

I'm thinking of starting a 12 step group for rose addicts....
