newbie question.... healthy rose plant, no flower

Hello,

We had planted several rose plants (bought from Home Depot,
also from a nursery)last year. Two of those plants grew
at a (more than) healthy rate. The plants always looked great;
however, those 2 rose plants NEVER flowered throught the whole
year. Do some rose plants never flower? Or something wrong
with our soil/ fertilizer we're feeding?
FYI, I am in Chicagoland area (for weather considerations).

Your comments/suggestions are appreciated...

What variety are they? Some old fashioned roses bloom only in the
spring.
And some roses bloom only on the previous year's growth.

Roses need plenty of sun, preferably throughout the morning. If they
are in the shade, move them.

What fertilizer did you use? Too much nitrogen
may result in lots of vegetative growth at the expense of flowers,
though this isn't usually a problem.

They will probably bloom this year. If not, shovel prune them. Life
is too short to waste on balky roses.

The most likely scenario is that you purchased plants that sent out suckers
of the rootstock and the top grafted portion died. Poor quality plants,
lack of disease control, and cold winter weather all contribute to suckers.
Hybrid teas are maintainence intensive plants that need constant spraying
and a lot of winter protection.. Home Depot is also one of the worst sources
for roses unless you are really experienced and can spot the occasional
deals. You need to learn about roses that will survive in a cold climate
with the level of care you're willing to give them, like rugosas or Canadian
Explorer roses.

I've heard that if they get TOO much water, the leaves will do great, but
not the flowers.

You may be right; I watered almost everyday (because
I thought that would help the plant grow & flower).
I admit I know VERY LITTLE about growing roses.
I want to learn; hence, I am reading this newsgroup.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

Roses are thirsty plants, and it is almost impossible to overwater
them. I seriously doubt this had any bearing at all on the plant's
failure to flower.
I water my roses several times a week. They all bloom very nicely
every year.
Lack of sunlight is a far more probable cause of failure to bloom, but
there can be other reasons.

What variety is it? Where is it planted? What kind of fertilizer did
you use and how often? The answers to these questions might help
pinpoint the problem.

The little Ortho book on roses is an excellent, reasonably priced
guide to basic rose care. It is available at any home improvement
store or from Amazon.
