Phoenix, odd names, etc. (was silly name for a new variety)

"J. Del Col" wrote Phoenix requires larding or a moist cooking method. It is similar to Guinea Fowl in that respect. Problem with phoenix is the digestive upset...keeps rising from your gut. Built-in gastro-esophageal reflux there. Got a Reichpraesident von Hindenburg at Roses Unlimited near Laurens, SC. (Also stopped at Ashdown Roses a few miles up the road. Both places are worth a visit if you're in the area, northern SC a bit south of Asheville, NC. Ashdown is only about three years old yet already has a big selection. Roses Unlimited has almost all their roses in greenhouses but I didn't see any disease, and many roses were promoting themselves by being in full bloom, notably a Louis XIV I bought. Both nurseries are well-equipped with nursery cats.) Mentioned the name to a friend: "Oh! That's the rose that, once you plant it, quickly gets crowded out by a more- aggressive variety..." Yes, and that more aggressive variety is completely intolerant of "Barbara Streisand" and "Baron Edmond de Rothschild." J. Del Col |
