THRIPS on 50 year old rose
 

Two problems seem to be hurting my roses since I stopped using
systemic rose foods.

THRIPS are attacking each new bud cosuming 25% of the outer green cover
before bud opens. New flower is distorted. Also see a liquid or gel on
each attacked new bud.

The leaves on other nearby roses are being perferated with thousands of
tiny holes. there is little remaining of many of these leaves.

What home brew DIY mix can I use to stop both types of destructions?
Insecticide soaps are a bit expensive. Do they help?

I have never tried it on roses, but I have used regular dishsoap mixed with
water and literally drenched my other plants. This is a very friendly ( well
not to the bugs) environmentally safe way to rid yourself od pests. It is
GREAT for killing bees and wasps!

Oh my God! I can't believe you want to kill bees. How do you think many
flowers are pollinated!?? Poor bees. On cans of insecticide it even says to
"apply in the evening when bees are less active"-to prevent harming them,
although I don't really agree that it would harm them any less. Killing
living creatures isn't GREAT!
I really don't mean to sound nasty here,but along with plant life, I also
care about most living creatures. Sis

Bees generally don't attack unless you're too
close to a nest. I work on my roses bushes
right next to bees throughout the daylight
hours (which can be quite long here in the
south) and have yet to get stung.

bee sting is a life-threatening event. I can see someone like
that wanting to kill bees.

Gail, I just love you! Thanks for your kindness. I have the same experience
as you, in working right along side bees in my garden. They never seem to
mind me being there, next to them. Oh course, I never do anything to cause
them to become defensive, like swatting at them or shooing them away. I also
never wear anything with fragrance during the spring or summer. I'm gong to

Sorry,but I disagree. If bees are life threating to someone, they should
stay away from gardening. One could not kill all the bees in their
garden/yard. People with that type of allergy should carry the special
antidote for it,though, which I believe is a prefilled syringe with
benedryl.

Sis - I learn something new every week about
the yard and garden, often smacking my hand
on my head and yelling at myself "You idiot!"
since some things seem so obvious once someone
else points them out. :) That's why I like coming
to newsgroups so much. I've learned a lot from
other people's experiences and study.

to say that I disagreed with the people that think that way.(ie: thinking
that they could possibly kill all the bees on their property, and then feel

Seems I must have started a little feud here without meaning too. When I
use soapy water to kill bees/wasps I should have meantioned that I only do
this rid rid myself of a NASTY huge nest of yellow jackets that were trying
to take over my horse barn and pastures. Sorry but they had to go.
As for those bees, yes, they dont bother me and can stay , but the wasps
have to go.
