I'd like to know if they're functional outside in the grass, dirt, etc.

Standard boat deck shoes are good for gardening. Ankle boots are higher for
tilling or working tilled soil. Full cotton coveralls are suggested.
Can't figure why someone would wear such a contraption except for shock and
awe factor of people you don't know, general public. Which has no bearing
on gardening at your home. But, that's just common sense me.

a strapless jandal, thats all. We have had Jandals here in New Zealand for
the last 60 years. Jandals are a cut down of the name Japanese Sandal, a
name our diggers bought home after ww2 having seen something similar in
Kapan. Aussies call them thonsg whilst other cultures call them flip flops.
They usually come with a simple strap that fits between the big toe and
second toe. Easy to flop along in but prone to getting caught on the
pavement as the front curls over and hard on the toes and heel arch if worn
too long. Good however for an improvised game of cricket using a tennis ball
and the jandal as a (very small) bat. I used to use a leather jandal at high
school to play court yard cricket. This derivitive simply has some emulsion
that sticks to your feet via sweat I understand.

Jandals are good at the beach if you simply want to slip something on and
off easily. Also good for a quick dash to the post box or walking up the
garden. They offer little protection from things like broken glass, dog shit
or nails. Every kiwi kid has some story of a cut foot and grazed toe from
jandals. Not good for any form of work involving digging or especially lawn
mowing. We still see crazy *******s from time to time mowing their lawn in
jandals. Go to Fiji and the locals mow lawns, build houses, use scrub
cutting equipment wearing jandals.

Also prone to be uncomfortable if worn too long. Not for trips involving any
degree of walking. Wear sandals instead.
