Help on finding used push/reel mower
 

I just got a house with a very small yard and am interested in buying
one of the tiny old-style push mowers (where all the power is provided
by the person pushing; i.e.; no gas or electric engine at all). I've
seen them all over the place in my old neighborhood; but can't seem to
get any of the mower shops to understand what I'm looking for.

Anybody have any tips on locating one of these things? Even better
terminology would be a help to me. I've heard I might be able to get a
new one at Breed; but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg on what is
essentially a trial for me.

Ours came from Lowes for $99. A 16" model was even less. Return
policy is 15 days.

I've got one that isn't quite up to mowing an acre full of rocks and sticks,
so it doesn't get used. It's a Craftsman and it's yours for $20. I'm in
Oak Hill.

Try asking for a reel mower, manual reel mower. Although I think
people selling them should know what you're talking about w/ "push
mower".

They are very eco friendly and actually more convenient for a small-
sized yard then gas mowers. But they don't bag the grass.

Try asking for a reel mower, manual reel mower. Although I think
people selling them should know what you're talking about w/ "push
mower".

A lot of people seem to think that "push mower" means "gas powered
mower that is not self-propelled".

And just why does the City sell those nasty little electric mowers on
the cheap and not do anything about discount hand-mowers? It's just as
stupid as the fact that the City gives breaks on air-conditioning to
people who already have it but does nothing about cheap fans for those
who don't.

Good question. Both would reduce VOCs.

It's just as stupid as the fact that the City gives breaks on
air-conditioning to people who already have it but does nothing about
cheap fans for those who don't.

The city subsidizes replacement of wasteful air conditioners instead
of building more fossil fuel-fired generating facilities to run them.
At least that's the theory.

unsure if they're appropriate for my back yard - I've heard
that zoysia doesn't like thatch buildup, which I assume would
be an issue with a push reel mower.

Are there any zoysia owners who use reel mowers that can
comment?

I finally bought one of those blower/vacs/mulchers to combat my leaf problem
(neighbors who never ever tend their yard, i.e. its been 3 years since they
even raked). It is possible to vacuum the back yard now...lol
You could try something like that to combat thatch.

btw: its a rental property next to me, so last week, while it was vacant I
got desperate and went and got rid of the leaves myself. It was self
preservation really, since I can spend every weekend, all weekend, 52 weeks
a year raking my yard because of their yard with 20 plus trees on it- lots
of leaves! I am so happy now...lol..first weekend in the last 2 years I have
not had to rake!

The City helps buy a.c. units that would have been bought anyhow,
because the old, existing one needed replacement--virtually any new
unit is better than an existing one. People who don't have a.c. or who
have old, inefficient a.c. that still works will keep the status quo,
because the City subsidy goes to people who can already afford a new
unit, not to people for whom the subsidy is not enough to make a
difference.

Can't somment about zoysia but definitely know that you can buy a
grasscatcher for your hand mower and then use the clippings as you
wish.

Maybe it's changed, but used to be you couldn't just plop down a
replacement unit. The house had to be insulated, weatherized, leak
checked, solar screens installed to qualify for the city program. The
conservation incentive is I think key to the program's benefit.

People who don't have a.c. or who have old, inefficient a.c. that still
works will keep the status quo, because the City subsidy goes to
people who can already afford a new unit, not to people for whom
the subsidy is not enough to make a difference.

A definite issue. You have to apply for the loan like any other and
meet credit and income requirements. This will definitely exclude some
low income families that might benefit. OTOH, anyone living in a
leaky house with an old a/c is probably going to save more money each
month on electricity than you'll spend making payments on the loan.

Bottom line though, is it good deal for us as citizens and taxpayers?
