There is a 30 foot pecan tree out back in the creek area that has not
leafed out. Everyone else (American elm, cedar elm, cottonwood, etc.)
out there is in full green. All the other pecans in the area have been
well leafed out for weeks. I was figuring that this particular guy
just up and died over the winter, and was getting ready to get out the
chain saw. But I took the binoculars out there and, sure enough, there
are little green buds just opening up on the ends of the branches.

I've never really noticed this happening in this particular tree,
which has otherwise been reasonably healthy. I know that pecans leaf
out late, but is there really that much variation in when pecans put
out their leaves? Is it a matter of variety, or perhaps location?

Yes, there is much variation. The pecan grove where I volunteer has at
least three varieties over two acres, planted in clusters, and all leaf out
at different times over the course of a couple of weeks. And some years, the
whole grove is really late compared to other pecan trees in the area.

Must be the same variety and temperament as I have. One is showing some
leaves, the other just now showing signs of intent to do so.

Probably used to more water during the spring, and therefore late to bud
since there has not been a lot?

Well, it is in the creek bed, sitting on silt, maybe about 4-5 feet
above the water table, so it has it's roots in a lot more water than
most of the trees around. Tap root oughta be pretty wet.

Now, I can't swear it hasn't done this every year.

There are different types of Pecans, I have two large trees and one is about
3-4 weeks behind the other.
Also Pecans are the last to leaf out, most are just starting too.

Lemon is out. But they are not planted in the ground in Austin.

Guess my pot planted lemon tree is dead then. Got it seed from my brother,
he gave me a sack full of lemons. He lives north of canyon lake. He's got
2 lemon trees on his property by his house.
