sweet gum tree

I have a couple of sweet gum trees and the tops of these trees are bare.
The leaf line seems to be coming down. They are fairly mature trees (15 +
years with about 4 years in the current place). I have not been watering
them very regularly although after seeing the leaf line descend I have
resorted to more watering. Any suggestions on what could be wrong ?

It begins with where these trees are. Sweetgums are not native to
Central Texas and prefer wetter soils east of Austin. But there are
some here that do well, mostly in bottomland soils with supplemental
watering.

I would recommend keeping them well watered.

Yeah, good suggestion, Rusty!

My favorite big show trees in Austin is that row of sweet gums along the west side of
the WellsFargo/Caldwell Banker building at Loop 360 and 2244/BeeCaveRd.

Come the fall, they are to die for!!
