Looks like the city is spraying again, but this time you have to write a
letter to get on the no-spray list. This is ridiculous!

West Nile Virus is much better.

Oh brother. I'm glad I live in Round Rock. To my knowledge, no spraying

yet.
It certainly is ridiculous. What are they spraying? Malathion? I wonder

how
many cases of respiratory arrest will result.

Are you referring to the following press release concerning three nights of
spraying in three zip codes in south Austin?

Has there ever been any studies that show DEET to be
harmful? I have never seen any data from a verified & controlled study
that indicated there was a problem. It is the only thing that works for
me while fishing & hunting in swampy areas. Got to have it:-)

Yes. However, 78703 is not South Austin, is it?

WHAT are they spraying? I've caught some news reports and nothing
mentions the chemical. Just that it breaks down in sunlight. I have a
TPWD backyard habitat and I'm not enthused about this (to put it mildly).

It's not only the City of Austin who is spraying. It's a cooperative
between Travis County and CoA. I know the guys who work there pretty well.
I'll ask them what they are spraying and post it here.

I also have a TPWD and NWF Certified Backyard Habitat. Fortunately, Round

Rock
decided not to spray. I wonder what they are using.

Thank you. I've emailed the City Council about this and got a prompt response
from the Director of Health and Human Services. I was not pleased with their
decision to remove the no-spray list without any public input. If you are
also displeased with this, please feel free to email David Lurie to speak
your mind: david dot lurie at ci dot austin dot tx dot us

Reading the threads to this reminds me of Andy Wasowski's book, "The
Landscaping Revolution" where he has on page 82 a picture of a Chem-lawn
man wearing a yellow slicker, trousers, rubber boots, respirator, cap
and gloves while spraying a tree with the oily stuff to suffrocate the
tree mites and parasites. He then goes on to talk about A Chem-lawn
brochure that boasts about its safety precautions such as protective
clothing, periodic medical monitoring of employess and lab tests for
major organ functions. Says that Chem-lawn is working with the National
Cancer Institute to determine what if any cancer risks are associated
with long-term exposure to herbicides. The brochure winds up saying to
people and pets, "Stay off treated areas until they are dry". But, what
about the next day or the next week?

Mr. Lurie, people (which include children) and wildlife are affected by
the decision to remove the no-spray list without any public input. I
trust your children and friends are not among any of these folks that
are affected. Gosh, David, after all, the no-spray list would respect
your constituents decision and save the political organization some
money. Wouldn't you rather want to do the right environmental thing for
all of us and resurrect the no-spray list?
