Sandburs... Ouch !
 

Hello all... I was just wondering if there's a way to rid my lawn
of these nasty sandburs (stickers) before they come back in the spring.
Is there anything on the market I can spread or do now, to keep them at bay?

If these are the fairly soft sandbur (not hard, pointy sticker -- it may
work on stickers also, but I have no experience using it on them), then I've
had good luck with MSMA. You can get it at Home Depot. It's labeled as a
crabgrass killer. Warning -- I believe that it will also kill grasses such
as St Augustine. You may also be able to use a pre-emergent, but my sandburs
germinated in the fall and are quite healthy now. I will be spraying them
soon.

Thanks for that info... They are the hard-pointy type.
My whole lawn is this, so there's no real grass to damage.

Aren't those called Johnson grass? I've heard the only way to kill them
is to spray them with Roundup right about the time you put wildflowers
out - Nov/Dec.

The Aggies seem to use grassbur and sandbur to mean the same thing.

thing. Doesn't have stickers, either. http://tinyurl.com/2f9b7

Of course, for us "organic" types, pulling the damn things is the only
way to go. Get 'em while they're still green, the stickers don't stick
as bad, and of course it keeps 'em from going to seed, so you have fewer
next year.

Thank you DT for that great info on sandburs. Sounds like I need
to do the msma real soon then try to get my lawn really healthy so I can
weed-out/choke them burs.
