Organic remedy for stink bugs?
 

We have an infestation of stink bugs in our tomatoes. The usual
insecticidal soap treatment is just not as effectve as I would like.
Does anybody out there have a good organic remedy they would share?

We have found stink bugs resistant to soap, hot sauce and Neem Oil,
however they do drop dead with Pyretheum. Which is a flower, yet it is
deadly poison to them. Breaks down quickly and is not very dangerous to
people.

Yeah... "not very dangerous" is not something I'm going to try on my
food. :)

Pyretheums are organic, made from crysantemums, and break down totally
to non-toxic in a matter of hours. They are the only organic answer to
certain pests/

For you fall tomatoes, if you have a heavy infestation of stink bugs, you can
build a barrier cage from simple 1x2 wood, or pvc pipe and use screening or
Remay. Tomatoes are wind pollinated so insects do not have to get in the little
screened area to pollinate.

Pyrethrum is very toxic to pests, lizards, and everything else. It won't be
harmful to you if you wash the fruits, as it is not systemic, but if it have
pipernol butoxide (which is a synergist and toxic) it is not organic.

I would make a nice soup of D.E. and hot sauce or hot pepper spray and get that
out on the foliage. If you want to pump it all up, use garlic also.
Garlic pepper tea recipe:

One entire garlic bulb, three habernero peppers in a blender with some water.
Strain out the solids which can be strewn near the plants. Making sure the
solids are out, add that to a gallon container and fill with water. That is
concentrate. Use one half cup of that into another gallon of water and spray
out in the morning. Dust with D.E. while the foliage is a bit wet so it will
stick. You can always add your horticultural soap as a contact killing device
with the garlic/pepper tea. When you store the tea, make sure there is no tight
lid on it or it will burst in the fridge. It can go bad if not refrigerated.

Are these bugs a problem or just a nuisance? I've noticed a bunch on my
tomatoes also, they didn't *seem* to be doing any harm, but I haven't
looked too closely.

I'm hoping they'll be feed for other critters...

Stink bugs can be both problem and helper. I have been reading that they
feed on aphids-so that is good of course. The bad they do is puncture the
tomato itself and feed off it, leaving the resulting tomato with at worse
little white specks on it.

I have share the concern with you, I battled them this year myself. I
eventually found that the best chemical control was the 2.00 powder from the
dollar store, it is Pyrethrum and labeled garden and pet pest killer. I just
squirt it around.

Good luck to you! Those critters are stubborn and don't like to leave. I
eventually gave up fighting when I learned they eat aphids. I would rather
have tomatoes with white specks than aphid invested plants.

I am thinking for next year I will order ladybugs and praying mantis' and
let them do the work.

If I could just find an insect to eat snails and slugs!

We just plant about 2x the number of plants we need, and split the take
with 'em (and the grackles, and worms, and whatever else). We still
have more tomatoes than we can eat, process and freeze, and give away.
