HELP PLEASE Screening with EVERGREEN Clematis

Hi,

I have a dividing wall six foot high by nine foot wide on which I have
erected a trellis that extends the walls height by aprox one foot.

My intention is to screen the whole wall and trellis with some kind of
quick growing EVERGREEN creeper.

At the moment I have planted three very small Golden Ivy plants that I
had given to me, but am now wondering if this is such a good idea as I
am concerned they will grow through the open type block patterned brick
and become difficult to maintain. from my neighbours side as they have
a conservatory that overlooks me only one foot from the wall.

I am now thinking of removing the ivy and planting some EVERGREEN
Clematis, which will be reasonably quick growing and be somewhat easier
to maintain.

I am living in the NW of England; the wall is east facing in a very
sheltered spot that receiaves 60 per cent sun for half of the day, the
soil is of compost to one foot in depth and reasonably well drained.

Any advice on what EVERGREEN Clematis to go for or any other thoughts
would be much appreciated..

Many Thanks.

Rick.

There's only one that is reliably hardy and evergreen in the UK:
C. armandii. If it likes the conditions, it can be very vigorous
indeed - much more so than ivy.

Nick Maclaren.

Thanks for the info Nick.

Do you think I would be just as well sticking with the Golden Ivy ? Are
they similar regarding control and maintenance ?

Regards.

Rick.

Hi

Have you considered jasmine? I used to live in the NW and had some
jasmine against the house wall which spread amazingly well - but it's
easy to cut back and also has wonderful smelling flowers. It's
evergreen and fairly easy to train. Also there is winter-flowering
jasmine which has yellow flowers but doesn't climb the same but does add
a bit of winter interest.

Best of luck
Lynda

I think you may be better choosing something like Euonymus fortunii its a
much better evergreen, Clematis, even the hardiest of the evergreens are not
strictly evergreen but wintergreen and they tend to change their leaves in
summer and can look a mess, they are all also huge and rampant plants if
happy (dead if not!)
Don't get me wrong I love clematis, think they are wonderful plants but
foliage and screening is something better done by other plants.
