Rowan tree
 

Hi I have a rowan tree in my garden and the bark is badly split. During high
winds recently a large branch broke off and it was very dry and easy to
break up. I have had a few people at my door looking for gardening work and
they all say that my tree is dead, but it leaves evey year and has plenty of
berries.

Any ideas, do I get rid of it or can it be treated.

Advice from door callers is dubious as a rule~ and in this case
totally wrong. As it flowers and fruits each year it is quite well.
Rowans frequently have split bark that causes no harm.
The branch that fell might have been dead but that would be very
local. Just tidy up the wound if within reach.

I'm with Brian on this, if you want to keep it just tidy it up a bit.

Have a look at this one in the Clwydian Hills, it's been like it for
years. I passed by it again last week and it's still the same.
