Ideal aspect for greenhouse
 

Is it a cardinal sin to build a greenhouse with the roof running North/South, rather than the recommended East/West?

I have a 100ft long North/South facing garden, which is extremely narrow on the East/West axis, just 17ft wide. As I wish to acquire a 12ftx8ft greenhouse, I would not have enough space at either end for access at the entrance and for cleaning glass at the ends etc.

The only viable axis is the North/South one - is it really such a big deal to have the length facing east/west?

It will (for the forseeable future due to funds constraints) be an unheated greenhouse in which I plan on growing winter salads, raising seeds/cuttings, and summer tomatoes, chilis etc.

I also have a long 225 ft & 20ft narrowing to 17 ft garden.My greenhouses
run north/south & have found there is plenty of light.I grow orchids in a
12x8 & toms etc in a unheated 8x6 .It is best to run east/west so the
greenhouse can catch as much light in the winter months.

No of course not, the ideal may be E-W (for making the best of the
light, esp. in the months when the sun is lower in the sky), but things
will still grow fine with it running N-S

Interesting correspondence. I always thought North South would be the best
to get early morning warmth and shield from too much heat in the middle of
the day.

I think the idea is in the summer it doesn't matter to much, and it is
easy enough to shade from excess sun.

I think the idea is that in the spring in particular, the sun is lower,
and the NS orientation make better use at this time of the available
sunlight.

But I suspect it is a fairly marginal thing.

Any direction is better than none at all....unfortunately there is too much
shade in my garden to put a greenhouse anywhere....believe me had I space
the greenhouse house would up lickety split in WHATEVER postion....H
