Default OT where can I get one of those intercoms for the front door?

I think we should be able to ask who is at the door before opening it, I
remember, and that could be a first for me, remembering that is, there used
to be gadgets you put outside with a speaker and a microphone in, so if
someone rang the bell you could ask who it was before opening the door, but
I have no idea where one would go for such a gadget.

So, which store do I ask at first?

Go to your nearest Electrical Wholesaler and ask about 'Door Intercoms' I
fitted quite a few but they are a pain in the neck if fitted anywhere near a
damp situation. These are ideal for door entry within an Apartment complex
where they are well and truly in the dry of a reception hall.

Said to be 'waterproof', 'weatherproof' etc even to certain grades of water
ingress, but stand by for trouble :-((

Get yourself a peep hole in the door.

OK! So what happens when you look through the
peep hole, see a postman, open the door only to find he isn't ?
It's been done before and with disastrous results.

Eeeerrrrrr exactly the same as when you answer the intercom, if it is
working after getting wet, and a voice say's 'It's the postman' but of
course you can 'see' the uniform on an intercom?

Ugh. That terrible murder case which just recently went to trial is an
example of that. I suppose a peephole allows you to see if it's friends or
relatives visiting, though. But what a world we live in when we have to
fear a visit from an unknown postman or parcel delivery man etc.

Then you ask him for the telephone number of his head office, and ring them,
and contact the police at the same time!

Harrison & Dunn, ironmongers, of Stamford and Bourne. They hve been
selling a single-camera doorphone system for around £15. It can drive
a solenoid for door opening, but you have to buy that separately.

:-((( they really are trouble if installed on an outside weather door. :-((

When I was in business I stopped selling them because of the complaints of
failure. No not my installation, the goods themselves.

But remember Alan, if in doubt, always, always ask to see a badge or
official ID card. Don't go by uniform alone, please. If still in doubt,
please do as you suggest and ring his HQ or the police. Sad to say,
horrible things happen in the nicest places BUT it's as well to remember
that such occurrences are extremely rare. They're very, very rare, in fact,
so don't let sensational newspaper reports get to you.

They are designed for multi-floor flats, but if you live in a house
with its own front door you don't need one. When someone rings at your
front door, if you stand behind the front door with it closed, you can
hear each other perfectly well. Just ask them who they are.

A small eye-spy-hole can be fitted in wooden doors very cheaply (you
can see the visitor, they can't see you).

All reputable tradesmen, and "official visitors" such as meter
readers, postmen, police, carry ID. Ask them to hold it up to the
spy-eye, or post it through the letterbox.

I think you'd probably be better off googling for 'door entry intercom' or
something similar. Audio and video door surveillance and access control
systems have been in use in commercial premises for decades, and there are
lots of specialist firms for supply and/or fitting and maintenance, I'm sure
you'll find whatever it is you're looking for on the Net.
