Hi folks, I have a 'bare' patch at the bottom of my front lawn and am looking for some advice/inspiration on what to plant in it. any ideas? what would look best? would like to stay with the same theme as up the back.

My dear sir or madam there is nothing with which to start from, no reference to the “back” which means there is nothing to go on. You are wasting everyone’s time!!!!

I can't quite make out what they are from the pic; but you could make a start by getting more of the same, and putting them round the edge, with taller stuff in the middle. At the edge I'd want to grow some things which flopped over the stones in a natural way. Some of the stuff in the back bed could probably be split: you divide the plant, making sure to get a bit of root on the cut-off part, and plant in the new position. Get back to us if you can find out the names or get some close-up photos. It looks as though a small tree would be good for the very middle -- something which flowers is always effective, so a flowering crab-apple such as Malus floribunda or a flowering cherry might do the trick. Have a look at your neighbours' gardens, and don't be afraid to ask them the name of anything you like the look of. Later in the year you can put some bulbs in for a show next spring or summer. -- Mike. |

It needs colour, shape, height .... everything! I'd put a Rhus at the front in the middle of the stone, to give depth and great colours in the autumn for the house. I'd make another path from the main one and curl it around another bed at the centre, with lots of flowers, lavenders for fabulous scent when people brush pass them. It would make it look bigger and so so much more happier. When can I start? |

Personally I think that strange bed looks looks just that..strange, it has no relationship to the plants at the back. Have you removed a plant/plants from that bed and wish to replant? From the photo I would say you need a complete re-design of your front garden. It's plain and rather boring and if you are getting into gardening you will soon feel the same way yourself. Perhaps if you get a hosepipe and lay a curve between both beds and see if one large bed curved (crescent shaped) around joining the two would look better, it would certainly give you more plant room. Then you need to decide if you want a minimum maintenance garden or one that you have to do things too, the latter tend to be the more interesting and colourful.
