Newbie Question - Pruning a Clematis
We planted a Comtesse de Bouchard last year and it flowered very well.
The instructions say, "Prune hard in early Spring", but we don't know what that means. There are some woody stems at the bottom, and the first new growth is about 2ft off the ground. There are quite a few new shoots with what look like buds already forming. Could you please advise us on the pruning. Thank you and best wishes Daphne |

Newbie Question - Pruning a Clematis
I'm glad to see this question - we have a clematis which is as high as the
garage (growing up the front of it), however we need to paint so it will have to be cut back - how much can I cut it back? We cut back a honeysuckle severely on our patio in July last year as we were having new windows put in & it is now growing beautifully again. I don't know which variety the clematis is but it is starting to get purple flowers on it - it is quite woody though. |

If it has 1" blue/purple bells (loose bells, that is) now, and has multiple stems coming out of the ground, then it is probably C. alpina. A very nice plant. You can shear it down to the ground after flowering, and it will flower well again the next year. In fact, that is one recommended way of pruning it, and is what I do to mine! Newbie Question - Pruning a Clematis
'Daphne',
'Prune hard in the spring', which is what you should do with Comtesse De Bouchard, means that you should cut the stems right back to the bottom pair of buds, about 6-12in from the ground. This plant readily produces new shoots from below ground level and hard annual pruning encourages this so that, in effect, you are beginning each year with a healthy new plant. Regards, Emrys Davies. Newbie Question - Pruning a Clematis
Hello
Just spotted this thread I have several clematis and I'm not sure which class's that each of them may fall in to. Would you by any chance know of a web site to identify them from. Many Thanks Steve :3 )~~ "Michael Berridge" wrote in message ... Daphne Dean wrote in message ... We planted a Comtesse de Bouchard last year and it flowered very well. They are vigorous growers and flower on this years growth. (group 1 are ones you don't prune, and group two you prune lightly in spring). Mike www.british-naturism.org.uk |
