Hi. Where in the UK do I buy a hand post auger that allows me to hand
drill holes about 4 or 6 inches in diameter and up to 6 feet deep? Must
be some retailers in UK. :c)

Try Farm Suppliers. we have one called SCATS, 'Southern Counties
Agriculture Trade Supplies' as it says it is along the South Coast, but
who knows, they may have a web site. I 'may' be by their place at
Newport Isle of Wight tomorrow, if so I will pop in and see for you.

SIX feet? Try an oil industry supplier :-)

The normal hand auger is 3-4' only. Most agricultural suppliers
should stock them. Why do you want one that goes down 6'?

The normal hand auger is 3-4' only. Most agricultural suppliers
should stock them. Why do you want one that goes down 6'?

Well 5 feet would do. Want to put in an earth rod, and instead of
bashing in a 6 foot rod, wanted to bore then surround rod with good
conductivity material.

Yep, 3 feet seems to be normal depth for hand augers.

I know, I probably should just hire, but I wanted to know where I could
buy one if I wanted to buy one.

Don't know when he was on Chichester, but are you in touch with Mick
Withington? He has approached me about starting an H.M.S.Chichester
Association. I recommended that he makes it a 'Class Association' with
the 4 Cathedrals. Llandaff, Chichester, Lincoln and Salisbury, he said
go for it!!

Let this gardening electrical engineer assure you it is more normal to
hammer earth rods into the ground than drill a hole for them..... The
exception would be if you know you are in a poor conductivity area, in
which case you put your rod in and surround it with something like
betonite (sp! - sorry can't remeber the spelling!)

I wonder what you want an earth rod for?

change my mind, and I want to use earth also for transmitting purposes,
which I might.

I recently bought a 4 inch one from the builders merchant "Travis Perkins"
for £33 + VAT. It's only about 3ft long, though. Anything longer and you
would have to use a ladder to reach the handle!
