Want to get a lawnmower - which?

After using mains electric, I've been looking at petrol rotary LMs. Don't
want anything way upmarket, but would prefer self-propelled type. Hayters
look great but too expensive for me. Mowerlands look good and come in iron
or ali alloy. Iron, someone said, rusts; ali's more expensive. Anybody any
ideas?
Under £300 please.

Thanks Janet. Quite a selection of stuff there - in my price bracket too.

Suggest that you have a look at Honda Izy range. Powder coated steel
deck and 4.5hp motor, slightly under £300 for a 16" self-propelled and
a bit over for an 18". Should be available at most garden machinery
specialists.

One point, is the area to cut fairly flat? If is has an appreciable slope
to be cut then you need a 2 stroke mower, unless you buy a 4 stroke with a
pressurised oil system, which are very expensive!

What's the significance of powder coated steel? Does this inhibit the
tendency of steel to rust?

Yes. Powder coating is similar to (stove) enamelling in that the metal (it
can be steel or alloy) is sprayed with a powder and passed through a furnace
to melt the powder and bake it on. Tough stuff.
