**HOW'S SCOTLAND DOING?**
 

We've been reading of the pretty nasty temperatures in Scotland and I'm
wondering how gardeners there are coping? I'm sure Janet on her Isle of
Arran will tell us that she's basking in the sunshine and went swimming this
morning but hope others aren't too wrecked by the weather? ;-)

Gawd, you wouldn't catch me swimming in the sea here; hypothermia in
winter, lion's mane stinging jellyfish swarms in summer ( and I've seen
what they do).

This morning, glorious sun. I left the laundry swinging on the line
and went to collect seaweed from a beach harvest I spotted the other
day. It turned out to be pure gold;seaweed and leafmould fragmented by
high wind and high tides, into a dry crumbly compost, delivered right
alongside the parking spot. Spread 20 bags onto triangle bed. Very large
snowflakes began to fall thickly but laundry was dry and soft in sea
breeze. Agree to forgo second seaweed run in case of blizzard. No
blizzard. Snow didn't stick at this level just above sea, sun again
later, snowy dusting on the mountain top across the bay. Think about
tidying palm trees instead.

As I suspected. Sickening. ;-) Re the seaweed you're beginning to sound
like a Jersey woman - rack on the shore etc!

Melianthus major showing slight frost crinkling from cold night on
Thursday ( minus 5 C), the coldest night here so far this winter.
Euryops pectinatus also looking pensive. Friend on mainland emails to
say she has just had visit from my son coinciding with visit from hers,
big-boy reunion and climb to top of her hill. I email her with news of
her brother; agree Edinburgh gallery visit for daughters' exhibition.We
agree the jungle drums are in fine fettle. Phoned opera friend about
drumming workshop for meditation group.Try to ring another son in frozen
snowy Aberdeen but no reply; probably gone out to ski Made daffodils,
three different coloured phormium leaves, and fatsia leaves, into pretty
birthday bunch for friend. Husband goes to specialist card shop for 50th
birthday card. Husband returns with blank-message card with black
border. Just about to shower and change for friend's birthday bash
tonight. Should not have had that second glass of wine. Over and out
from Scotland :-)

Sounds more like up and at 'em to me!

It's been sunny most of the day in Aberdeen. This is the first day that
melting has exceeded the overnight accumulation of snow. We still have 12"
or so of the stuff, and more is falling now. Bird feeders and bird bath were
in big demand today, and the squirrel finally found one of the feeders. I
remember reading a hilarious article on one mans fight against the squirrel.
He was an American journalist I think - bit hazy though - that might be
nonsense. Anyone remember?

Thank you SO much - that had me absolutely weeping with laughter. I'm
trying to imagine going into our local Tucker's Country Store in Ashburton
and asking for coyote pee. It might be really worth it.........

It's manky here but no rain. Yesterday, I went on the dog-walk wearing
trainers instead of my usual sturdy wellies. I didn't get muddy at all.
Today will be a different story. We now have at least three woodpeckers
hammering away but I have only been fortunate enough to see one of them
and binoculars haven't helped. (Felt rather self-conscious with
binoculars - a bit like a peeping Tom).

PS How's the troll in the netty doing? Are you feeding it?

Other than in ski resorts and drifts in lanes, I don't think I've even
*seen* 7.5 inches of snow! It's turned very much colder here, so I won't be
surprised if we do have snow. What we have at present is a real "Dartmoor
clag"!

Not even in your youth? I can remember walking up to the higher parts of
town with the snow well above my knees, and that was when I was in my
teens.
