Who's doing the counting?.

I have just counted over 58 subjects on uk.rec.gardening.
And that number does not include the multiple numbers of contributors within
each subject.. Please explain. Am I misreading you, perhaps : If you
speak your mind candidly I am not the sort of chap who will complain.
BTW, Music. clarinet, - and music saxophones are almost moribund most of the
time but nobody is shouting for help!. And contrawise no-one is threatening
closedown, either..
Your comments will be of interest.
Doug.

Must be a Hoax, this is an unmoderated newsgroup. Probably uses some ISP
that doesn't like newsgroups instead of "news.individual.net" which we both
use.

On News.individual at least a load of posts appeared and were

Although it was still necessary to reset the group (in OE at least)
to get rid of them all.

Do as I recommended previously. Install 40tude dialog. One can tell by

a) go to your main NewsReader window.

b) In the left hand pane, Right Click on the uk.rec.gardening
folder.

A menu should appear

c) Select [Properties]

d) Click on the [Local File] tab at the top of the dialogue box.

e) click on the [reset] button. Then close that box.

f) Then from the main menu along the top of the main Window, select [Tools]

Most likely just a clueless cv.net -user whose PC has been hijacked

That's interesting as the floods were predicted a week or two ago.

I think "consider it done!" was the reply from someone in alt.troll in

It's the person who posts in this group as "Ian Paul Freemanly". Watch
out for anything he responds to - his posts are almost always
crossposted to other groups, and if you then reply to him without

1. O.K. click on [Tools] on the top menu.

2. Does that produce a drop down menu with [options] at the bottom?

3. If it does ,click on that.

4. That should bring up a realy big Dialogue Box with Tabs at the top.

5. Click on the [maintainance] Tab (should be) on the top right.

6. Then click on the [Clean Up Now] button.

7. You then get the chance to select the folder(s) you want to clean
up.

8. Select [browse], browse around* and when you've found it, click on
the urg newsgroup folder. (And any others if you wish)

(*I don't know how easy it will be to find)

9. You then get the option to [reset] that folder - should be
the bottom button. Click on that.

10. Click on that and then reload the group from tools menu at the top.

[Problem with resetting NewsGroups in Eudora]

Possibly not. Maybe another Mac urg user will read this - I've renamed the
thread - and can offer first hand advice.

Try clicking on all the top menu options which IIRR you said earlier were -
File, Edit, View, Message, Format, Tools, Window, Help.

Do any of these offer an [options] er option?

Being able to reset a newsgroup is such a useful and desirable
feature that I'd imagine it will be in there somewhere.

Back this afternoon. This is now a challenge.

file) to do the same thing. I will try it the next time we have a deluge.
Perhaps Sacha has something similar?

I use Entourage which is the Mac version of OE, I believe. Please
tell

me
how to do that! Wanadoo is hopeless with this sort of thing. None of

the
techies appear to know the first thing about newsgroups and freely

admit
they aren't trained in any way to deal with newsgroup queries.

I'll use letters.

a) go to your main NewsReader window.

b) In the left hand pane, Right Click on the uk.rec.gardening
folder.

I don't have a right/left click mouse.

A menu should appear

c) Select [Properties]

d) Click on the [Local File] tab at the top of the dialogue box.

e) click on the [reset] button. Then close that box.

f) Then from the main menu along the top of the main Window, select

[Tools]

g) And then select [ Get the next 300 (or whatever) Headers ]

The only thing I can find at present is under View and it allows me to
select to see only unread messages. I'm sure I'm missing something
extremely easy but we start with the problem that my mouse doesn't do
what
you ask in your second instruction. Many thanks for trying to help.
I'll
fiddle about tomorrow and see if I can improve matters somehow.

Sorry yes I was forgetting you've only got one mouse button on a Mac
(I think). The solution posted by Rupert works fine on OE at least,
without the need for any right clicking.

My ribbon bar, to use Rupert's description has the following on it
Entourage, File, Edit, View, Message, Format, Tools, Window, Help.
I can't find anything under Tools which will enable me to do as Rupert
suggests. Heaven knows I'm not computer literate but I really am trying
to
sort this out, honest!

Don't worry-that info I gave will not work with Entourage(Sorry)--the
Options thingy is not there. I have just rung a friend who has tried it with
Entourage but unfortunately he can't see how to achieve what we want.
There will be a way as Michael says.

You're being incredibly kind and patient. Feel free to take this to email

Not that I can see.

Being able to reset a newsgroup is such a useful and desirable
feature that I'd imagine it will be in there somewhere.

I do hope so!

Back this afternoon. This is now a challenge.

I really hope you like a challenge..... ;-) But thank you - I do mean that
most sincerely. People here are so good at helping with computer problems,
as well as gardening ones. I'm always rather amazd at what diverse talents
we have here.

Sorry, I've made a complete hash of this. Please bear with me, as I
mixed up Entourage which is what you said you used, with er Eudora.
And so have been looking in the wrong newsgroups.

Do you know why your NewsGroup settings are greyed out ?

Couldn't this mean you're not using that program for reading
NewsGroups ? This mightn't be all that obvious, depending on how
many windows you have open at once. But the fact that the
NewsGroup settings are greyed out doesn't seem very satisfactory
to me, at least.

Unhappily, that doesn't work, either. I've had them all marked as "Read"
for ages but their 'ghosts' are still there. Under 'View', I can select
"View Unread Messages Only", which is what I have been doing. But that
means you can't refer back through other posts in a thread if you've already
read them. I am sure I'm being very stupid about this and that there must
be a way to clear read messages off my screen but I can't find the way to do
it. It's never been an issue before so I'm not sure where to start.

You'll nedd to work through all your menus, option by option
until you find one that looks as though it will clear the messages.
The problem is the menu trees aren't always in a logical order,
and its not always obvious which options will be on which menus
or what the options wil actually do.

this is from an Entourage Newsgroup

quote

If you're in Entourage X, you can clear ALL with a preference in Mail &
News-Compose-Clear List button, but the list will fill up again. This
option is not available in 2001.

/quote

I'm not sure if that makes any more sense than what's gone before. But
as I've noted in the other post the fact that your NewsGroup options
are greyed out in the menu (from memory) seems rather strange.

I don't know why they're greyed out and had simply assumed it was because
those bits weren't to be used while in newsgroup reading mode. I use
Eudora for both mail and newsgroup, atm. I am going to be getting someone
up soon to look at my computer and a friend's but can't do so until the end
of the month as she's away. My Mac mail program suddenly decided to pack up
a while ago, too, so perhaps this computer is just having a quiet and
stealthy nervous breakdown!

See if you have anything relating to subscribing to urg, perhaps under a
'general properties' type heading, and look for an option to change the
length of time that you keep posts before deleting them. You monitor urg
pretty regularly so you could set that down to 24 hours or less.

You're right and that's exactly what I'm looking for but not finding. I'm

the other possibility is that given the computer's temperamental behaviour

something.

Someone suggested that it's come about as the result of a squabble in
rec.ponds but it could just as easily be e.g. demon.local or any of the
other groups people here post to. However, rec.ponds and demon.local do seem
to have a lot of troll trouble quite a lot of the time. I'm sure someone
who is computer savvy will be able to track it down because AIUI there are
ways of doing that. But I wouldn't like to be the culprit when they are
discovered!
