Sorry everybody, just found the faq on ivy!! Would the Weed be Gone for
painting onto the ivy roots also be the thing for the remains of shrubs even
though they're not strictly weeds?

No, you need something stronger like SBK or Rootout. Ask in
gardencentre for "stump killer".
