Moso Bamboo

I have just bought some Moso Bamboo seeds from eBay and wondered if anyone
else here has ever grown this type of bamboo in the UK and if so any tips?

TIA
Simon

No I have not grown or seen this one before. Do the culms really get to that
size here in the UK?
The biggest culms I have seen in the UK are on PHYLLOSTACHYS 'SHANGHAI a
mere 3" in diameter.

Its Phyllostachys Pubescens (syn. P edulis)

I got some a couple of years back via the Bamboo Society Seed Distribution.
They're currently about 30 to 50cm tall here in Sheffield. Two were
replanted in a garden in the Lake District where they seem to have been
eaten by rabbits (syn. P. edulis).
Paul Whittaker's "taming the dragon"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...2685X?v=glance
is somewhat dismissive. He reckons it will grow well down in the
south west, but that its so slow to attain maturity that you're better
off growing other species further north.

Does that grow in your garden, Rupert, or is it tender?

Janet

Despite the group warnings about bamboo I planted P.Shanghai a few weeks
ago. It is supposedly hardy and the one I got had been overwintered outside
in Norfolk. Slight frost burn on a few leaves but otherwise very healthy.
This is what the supplier (Amulree) says about it:-
"This bamboo is set to revolutionise gardening in the uk,we are the first
nursery to offer this beast for sale. The biggest bamboo we can grow in our
temperate climate reaching approx 11m high, its thick, glossy, dark green canes
are almost 3ins in diameter, make sure you have the space as this will scare
the neighbours."

It was the last few words of their description that made it a must have:-)
