Default Suggestions for a wooden Tree Bench? and a sneaky question regarding Mint...

Hi All,

Looking for a nice tree bench to go around our elm tree in our garden. The trunk is around 1 meter in length (diameter?). Can someone give me some pointers? We don’t really want steel, and we certainly don’t want anything that needs painting regularly if at all. Any suggestions? We saw a really nice round one which I think was made out of teak but it cost £1400, which is above our budget. We did not want to spend much more the 500 or a bit more if it’s worth it. Would appreciate any feedback.

Also, as an aside question, we grow mint in our garden and we drink it with tea, but this year there are many greenflies on it. What is the best way to get rid without making the mint unusable?

Sorry for being cheeky and asking two questions in the same post.

Many Thanks,
Naomi.

Pick the mint and rinse the greenfly of with water

Not a problem, but you might get better reply's if you post each question
seperatly :~)

Many Thanks,

You dont need to pay that much, there are plans to be found on line and
you could get one made for half the price you are prepared to pay. I am
hoping someone in my family will make me one to go round an old pear
tree.

I would suggest teak, and I would also suggest eBay. I've bought
hardwood furniture in the past which wasn't teak and never will again.
"Hardwood" covers an enormous range of woods, some of which are more
suitable for our climate than others. There is a very good seller of
teak furniture on eBay. I would post their name here but wouldn't want
to run the risk of being accused of plugging them!

As for the greenfly you could always try some kind of organic control,
like a soap based spray. I'm sure Google will be able to help out with
that one!

Sorry to be negative, but at this price you won't find anything because
I have looked. I however found a wooden and metal vintage park bench at
£50 and I was really pleased. However, we still wish to make a bench
around our holly so we have decided to do it ourselves - but built a
large 'platform' kidney shaped around the base of the tree so that we
can all throw cusions and lie on it in the shade )

I always soak mine regardless before using in my tea. I would, as it is
so early in the season, pinch out the stems infested and spray with a
soapy water solution (washing up liquid). HTH

Thanks for the suggestions Jenny, it’s much appreciated!

As for the mint, we did try to rinse it out with water, but upon putting the boiling water on it many of the little creatures floated to the surface. I have to say that they are incredibly small so I could not see them at all until they floated to the tom.

Many thanks for the suggestion about the tree bench. I looked on google as you suggested and found two gorgeous ones and was wandering if anyone can help with either:

1. http://www.cyan-teak-furniture.com/a...sale_shop.html which is made from teak (so not much maintenance needed hopefully) but slightly on the expensive side.
2. http://www.farawayfurniture.co.uk/sh...ion=full&id=26 - this one which is also made from teak, looks beautiful and on google it mentioned to put voucher code 'googlebench' which should give some money off. I can’t see where to put the code in, any ideas?

Anyone used either two companies? Which one should I go with? That is definitely the one we both really like. Any help appreciated!

Also, is it true that teak needs less maintenance then normal hardwood? It does seem to be a bit more expensive, but neither of us is able to maintain regularly and we both dislike metal benches.

Sorry about rambling on,
Naomi.

Hi all when I replied, Jenny was the only person who replied to me, but now I see quite a few people are helping out. Just to say thanks for all the rest who took the time to reply.

I looked at EBay, but I was warned by a nephew of mine who I called earlier for advice regarding the wood quality and warranty that you get on ebay. He also helped with placing an order and getting that code thing to work. So I now ordered it and they give 3 years guarantee which means we have a bit of peace of mind. Many thanks for all of the advice; let’s hope it looks as good as in the pictures.

If teak is left unmaintained, it will turn a silvery grey colour, but that
is about all. To keep the bright orange original colour, it will need oiling
a couple of times a year. If you want to 'recover' from the silver state,
you will find various products to restore teak at yacht
chandlers............they do some good oil too.
