Daylily bug???

Hi everyone I live in BC Canada but our weather is so similar to the UK
that I feel you may be able to suggest something. My Daylilies seem to have
a bug that swells the bud preventing them from opening and some have tiny
green worms inside. They older then ten years and have never had any kind
of disease. Every book I look read says that Daylilies are "generally
trouble free" and goes into no further detail - I have checked with our
closest garden centres but so far no suggestions - I don't want to spray
them needlessly since I don't think it is going to effect the closed bud.
Anyone have any insights? Thanks for any help Jean

Daylily bug???

Hi,

Problem solver
The daylily escapes most pests and diseases, but keep a look out for any
flower buds that become abnormally swollen and fail to open. This will most
likely be caused by the hemerocallis gall midge, a tiny insect whose grubs
feed inside the unopened buds. As the pests are well protected from sprays,
the only remedy is to pick off and destroy any buds that are affected.
Because the main egg-laying period is in late spring, the late-flowering
varieties often escape damage.

That is from the following site

http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plant..._daylily.shtml

Here in the UK we can get a spray called "Provado Ultimate bug Killer" the
active ingredient is "Imidacloprid"
It protects against Lily Beetle although that is not what is causing your
problem, it may be suitable for the insect causing your damage.
It is a systemic insecticide so needs applying as soon as foliage appears.

It may be worth looking on internet for the active ingredient or searching
the shelves of garden centres and reading labels.
