Is it safe to use Builders washed grit sand on a lawn

I would say so.

I saw Alan Titchmarsh use a similar product (in fact probably the same
obtained through Tommy Walsh!) after having spiked the lawn first with a
fork.

He then took a rubber rake and raked (quite vigorously) the grit into the
holes and that was that.
