Fence height off ground
 

One of the family is replacing a rotten fence but wants to make sure that
the hedgehogs which visit frequently can get in and out. She needs to make
sure also that her v. small Jack Russell can't. Does anyone happen to know
the desired height under which a hedgehog can get into its favoured habitat?
We reckon something between four and six inches?

Its maybe easier to check the smallest hole the jack russell can get
through. Maybe by cutting out a series of holes of dimimishing
size around the edges of a sheet of corrugated cardboard. And then
placing that between the hungry dog and its food. And then make
the hedgehog access smaller still.

It wont make any difference how small a hole you start with, it will be
hedgehog size by the end of the night, they are almost as bad as badgers at
sticking to their established trade routes regardless of obstructions, I
have certainly witnessed a hedgehog scaling a standard fence panel, the
racket was unbelievable! and our present resident has been getting quite
grumpy with us for sitting out into the evening, sort of sits in the shadows
and grunts at us till we go in.
Anyway aren't Jack Russels the Houdini's of the dog world?

Lovely. We get them here sometimes and always know when because the dogs
stand there and do this sort of monotonous bark which is definitely their
'hedgehog noise'.

Yes they certainly are but this one really is very small so we don't want to
assist him by actually providing an exit!

How about just leaving a small gap, loosen the earth beneath it and let the
hedgehogs dig a way through, as it wil be just enough for the hedgehog and
slightly beneath the ground, it just might be too small for the dog to get
through.

A lot less than that. I rebuilt the side door of my garage a few years
ago and had to build up a new shaped bit for the bottom. Before I
fitted it I was sitting out in the garden one evening when one of the
local hedgehogs wandered along, squeezed under the door, spent some
time investigating the inside of the garage and came out again. I've
just measured the screws that now fix the bottom bit at two inches up
from ground level.

Good grief. I will pass that on and thank you so much! Even her very mini
Jack Russell would struggle with that. It's comforting to know because
she's installing a fishpond and a separate wildlife pond into a not-enormous
garden that backs onto cultivated fields. The hedgehogs are a source of
real delight so any garden alterations have to take them into consideration.
