Though I wouldn't put horse manure in the compost heap - I'd rather let
it rot down well on its own, then use it on its own.
As to saw dust or straw, I have chucked both in the compost heap at
different times, and still ended up with delightful black gold in time
:-)

Straw will rot down much quicker than sawdust especially if you heap it up
and cover it. Sawdust would need to be left for much longer, a good dusting
of nitrochalk would speed the process as the wood takes nitrogen to rot.
If you are on heavy soil the sawdust, once rotted, will make a good soil
improver as it will take more time to disappear completely. (been there done
that)

I'd say straw every time, Chris.
My late father-in-law used to deliver bread for the Co-op
with a horse-drawn van.
The horse was bedded on straw and he had to look
after him.
He won the best allotment three times running, and
was allowed to keep the cup, which is now a proud
possession of my son.

I will reserve my opinion of sawdust, except to say
I will never have it in my garden again. Never!

Hi Chris, I would go for the manure with straw as the straw will compost faster and will not take as much nitrogen out of your compost whilst it is breaking down, also sawdust can make your resulting compost quite acidic, hope this helps you, regards Steve.

I think that straw is the best as it rots very quickly. I just throw
mine on the garden for the winter and it takes care of itself

Provided what you get is nice and old, it won't make that much difference.
Rake off the top stuff, push it to one side, take the nice dark hot stuff
from underneath, rake the top stuff back over when you've done.

They would both be a good choice as long as you put it in a pile and left it
for at least a year before putting it on the garden. The straw we get here
and the horse manure will have seeds in them that will come up in your
garden, if you dont give them time to sprout and die before suing them.

Look Dwayne, we are Brits and do not really go in for all this litigation
that you lot like so much:-)

My wife swears by the sawdust variety.

I can't disagree, it mulches down nicely and the roses have been excellent,
as have all the other plants that have had their soil enriched by the stuff.

Straw apparently doesn't decompose so well. I may be wrong, just what I have
been told.

We use it both on the garden and in the compost heap and it has worked
wonders in both areas.
