Different topsoils question
 

Well I asked about topsoil a while ago and now I'm actually doing
something about it. Spent the morning digging over what we've got and
it's not too bad but we need more soil to make up the height.

What are the different types of topsoil. I've got quotes ranging from
£47 to £200 for the same amount of soil and am not sure what sort to go
for. What type of topsoil would the group recommend for a good lawn?

I'm no expert but some "top soil" is subsoil mixed with compost while
other top soil really is just that. Some is seived and graded and
other is "as dug". I would say that for making up levels you want
something that is stable and well draining and maybe the top few inches
should/could be of a higher quality or more of a "loam" which as I
understand it is soil mixed with organic matter.

I bought all mine from Wickes but I reckon I might not need as much as
you.

Hello,

I would always recommend a good quality top soil to lay a lawn and
always use Rolawn products, it may cost it more than average but it's
worth it. It needs to be at least 2 to 3 inches deep over the old
ground to give the turf the best bed possible to grow into and also
because of the quality it allows you to make the turf bed as level as
possible.

We had a few tonne of topsoil from British Soil Ltd in Wenvoe

They are very knowledgeable. The guy who delivered spent quite some time
wandering around the garden and gave us lots of helpful advice. We also had
our turf from them 5 years ago, it came with a 1 year weed free guarantee
and we've hardly seen a weed in the 5 years its been laid! Certainly worth
giving them a ring and explain what you're looking to achieve from your
soil, you'll advise on the best type for your needs.

Location may be an issue. My daughter living in Greenwich bought a lot of
topsoil that I think had come from an industrial site. Establish the
source.
