Walking stick cabbage

Just cut out my two cabbage sticks - both straight and I'm really
pleased with them. Drying them is the obvious next step, but when I
looked into what to do next, I found a mention about polyurethane
covering. Checked it and it's for cars?! I'm not sure what I should put
on them. I thought I'll do a bit of carving to decorate them - but I'm
wondering about a protection. Has anyone came across the above
mentioned covering - and/or has done a stick and used a varnish on it
or something else? I'm also wondering if I should remove the bark too -
I'm scared to damage it. I thank you.

You could apply 12 coats of Epifanes Hard Wood Oil made for boats and

Polyurethane varnishes are used in boats too.

Ta. Didn't register the polyurethane as being a varnish. Silly me.
We've got a pot of hard wood oil somewhere I'm sure in the cellar. I'll
use that then. I searched for more info and found some pictures and
noticed that the bark on the canes is very much what I have now and
therefore I shouldn't peel anything ... and I came across some antiques
too. Some canes are sold up to 200 squids! Maybe there's a business in
there for me considering the 10 seeds I got cost me 2 quids .... ;o)

Don't give up your day job. Epifanes Hard Wood Oil isn't HWO, it is a
varnish. You could end up with a sticky mess if you use real hard wood
oil.
My mum threw away my circa 1954 Jersey cabbage walking stick that I
returned with from a holiday. Another reason that I am not a
multi-millionaire.

Couldn't you do the same thing as they do with bull's pizzles? I believe
they are dried and stretched simultaneously, usually after removal from said
bull.
